Nature School

I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done.
-Mary Oliver

Nature School is a weekly, daylong educational experience for young people ages 6-12  and 13-19.    Skilled naturalist mentors draw students into a deeper connection with the natural world, themselves, and each other. They use mentoring techniques passed on from indigenous cultures to encourage students’ emerging gifts and interests.  Nature School students learn lifelong skills and inherit a dynamic wellness that will serve them on any path they choose to follow. Currently Nature School meets on Wednesdays from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m at a variety of wilderness locations throughout San Luis Obispo County.

Nature School students explore

  • Animals and the language of the tracks they leave behind.
  • Native plants and their uses.
  • Birds and what their voices say about the surrounding environment.
  • Games and challenges that deepen connection to the natural world.
  • Journal writing, use of field guides, and projects designed to build knowledge of local ecosystems.
  • Storytelling  and native handcrafts.
  • Timeless wanders through nature.
  • Wilderness stewardship.
  • Seasonal celebrations based on ancestral traditions.
  • Peacemaking principles.
  • Wilderness skills: making fires by friction, shelter building, safety in the wild, edible & medicinal plants and more…
